Guest numbers

Small IS beautiful, and we arrange intimate ceremonies.

You can choose to plan for 2 to 50 guests. Plus the couple, celebrant, photographer, musicians. Children under 5 come free, and dogs are permitted on leads.

Remember, as a general rule, about 10% of your invitees will decline. if you’re coming from overseas that percentage may be higher.

Getting here

We’re one hour’s easy drive west of Dublin or Dublin airport and two hours drive east of Galway or Sligo on the west coast.  Come all the way by taxi, rental car, or if there’s a bunch of you, organise mini-buses. For groups of more than 12, use multiple mini-buses, as big coaches won’t fit down the drive (and it’s a long drive!). Ask us for our taxi and mini-bus contacts.

Carbon conscious? If you decide to come by pedal power or public transport, we’ll shower you with Carbon-hero gifts.

Accessibility

It’s a ten-minute walk through our meadows and woodland to get to the ruined chapel. The way may be wet or a bit soft. Flat shoes, wellies or boots en route are advised. Brides might - or might not - decide to sling some high heels on when they get to the chapel.

Disabled access right to the chapel for a 4WD vehicle can be arranged. Please talk to us in advance, and we’ll help you with this in any way we can.

Sustainability

As our big thing here is Nature, we’ve made a real effort over the last few years to minimise our use of single-use plastics, nature-harming chemicals and reducing our carbon footprint year by year. We use natural soaps, clean with eco friendly substances and think hard about our energy-use, recycling, re-purposing and how to avoid plastics and packaging before we buy anything.

We’re not perfect but we’re really trying and as part of this campaign we ask you to consider more sustainable alternatives for your celebration, reduce plastic, to take any non-recyclable waste away with you, and support our goals in any way you can.

The weather

It is Ireland, after all, and it does rain here. It’s definitely part of the experience, and impossible to predict in any month.  So far, though, we’ve never had an outside wedding rained off.

The thick foliage of the beautiful Island Wood serves as a natural cathedral roof that really does keep off the worst of the weather - and if that’s not quite enough, we have nice big umbrellas.

VIEWINGS

We don’t do viewings from October to April as we have no permanent staff in the colder months, and are closed for weddings and elopements.

From June to September, we do arrange monthly Open Days when we love to meet you, or your suppliers. Please ask us for an appointment.

Apart from that, have a really good look at our info, look around the and grounds, pour over our Real Elopement albums, check out our social media, and if you’ve any questions at all, just email us!

Wildflowers and Decor

We are crazy about wild flowers and native foliage here. We can put together fabulous informal arrangements of wildflowers and foliage for your decor, bouquets and buttonholes. We also harvest and provide petal confetti.

All proceeds from these go to supporting our wildflower meadow project, and means you won’t be buying imported flowers with their heavy carbon footprints.

YOUR CEREMONY…

Symbolic or Legal

You can do either here. A Symbolic Ceremony gives you total freedom. You can appoint anybody to conduct the ceremony, anyhow. You might choose a relative, a good friend or a trained celebrant. Of course, the legal side of the marriage can be still carried out elsewhere, at another time.

A Legal Ceremony can only be conducted by certain celebrants from certain organisations. The ceremony venue has to be HSE approved as well (as we are). You’ll need to give notice of your intention to marry to a government registrar at least three months before the wedding date. If you’re overseas you can do this by post, as long as you can both visit the registrar in person at least five days before the ceremony.

Our Little Ruined Chapel

We have a little ruined chapel in the Island Wood. It’s ten minutes walk on grassy paths from your parking and we mark the way with rustic signage and lanterns.

If you like, we can make you a wild floral arch to bring everyone through on the way.

Most couples get wed in front of the ruin. We keep it beautifully stripped back, and natural. We light candles, and decorate the outside chapel arch and table with wild foliage and blooms from the estate – just let us know your palette and we’ll work with it. There’s a ceremony table inside and out - and a few rough hewn benches outside.

Celebrant

Choosing a celebrant is a very personal thing. If you’re planning to hire one, contact a few well in advance (as they can book out early) and chat to them. Explain whether you want a Legal or Symbolic ceremony ( only some are licensed to make it legal). A good celebrant will help you organise the paperwork, and spend time with you creating the ceremony that you’d like. Ask us for recommendations, if you like.

Photographs

You’ll have all afternoon to do your photographs here and so many beautiful little spots for them. Bring your own photographer. There are plenty of talented photographers to choose from, but the good ones can book out early, so do look well in advance. Having a weekday celebration will mean they’re more available. Just ask if you’d like to see our photographer list.
